Jewish Historical Museum

The Jewish Historical Museum (JHM) stands at the heart of the former Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, close to the Waterlooplein and the “Stadhuis” (Town Hall). The JHM is housed in a complex of four, restored Ashkenazi synagogues dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

These historically important buildings are connected by modern glass and steel constructions. These spaces remind us of the rupture in Jewish culture and the history of Amsterdam wrought by the Second World War. Opposite the museum is the Portuguese Synagogue, which is still in use, and the statue of the Dockworker which is in memory of the general strike against Jewish persecution during the Second World War in Amsterdam on 25 February 1941.
